So, Wendy and I undertook what could have been a daunting task, but one that others have pulled off on a regular basis….carving a pumpkin. Neither of us had carved a pumpkin since we were about six years old, so I decided why do the goofy triangle eyes when you can go for something cooler? Dr. Asian Snake did an Albert Einstein one, maybe I could find a good one too.

I scoured the internet and found a pattern of Hiro Nakamura from Heroes. It didn’t seem all that difficult, so we decided to give it a shot. We cleaned the pumpkin out and saved the seeds (more on that later), then proceeded to pushpin down the pattern to the round pumpkin, which was extremely difficult.

Wendy took the first swing, cutting out the Heroes helix-looking symbol that apparently means ‘Godsend.’ The pattern became more and more difficult to saw as it became soaked with pumpkin juice, but Wendy did a fantastic job.

She had plans to hang out with her friend Kara, so she had to leave…and I took over. First, I tried to trace around the pattern with a push pin, but when I saw Wendy just going at it, I changed my mind. But as I sawed, the pattern became so soaked with pumpkin guts that it was just sliding around, so I had to go back to my original plan.

I made a connect-the-dots style pattern on the pumpkin, discarded the pattern and went to work….and you know what? It didn’t turn out half bad (which is accurate, because about half of it IS bad…). I’m impressed with our first shot at a pumpkin since the early 1990’s. It wasn’t as good as the Einstein pumpkin, but it wasn’t terrible either.

We tackled the pumpkin after dinner, for which Wendy made a sort of chicken stir-fry. I have included a picture of the dish, which was a combination of chicken grilled in ginger, onion powder, salt and pepper and steamed snap peas, carrots, onions and mushrooms on a bed of brown rice. We had edamame as a side dish.

I also toasted the pumpkin seeds, covering them with a little olive oil. I then covered half of them with salt and pepper and the other half with cinnamon and sugar. They’re delicious, and not bad for you..aside from the sugar….

It was a pretty exciting day at work, as I moved my desk out into the main room. You see, I had been sitting in what’s dubbed as the ‘annex.’ It was me and one other guy who’s never at his desk basically in the hallway that leads out the back door. There is one  main room that contains the vast majority of desks, which is where I now reside. I feel like I’ve finally made it….

It seems to be warming up a little bit around here, which is good for me. This morning wasn’t as brutally cold as it has been the past couple days, and I think tomorrow should be even better. Although I haven’t really talked about it, I have still been working out, alternating stair days and run days. Today was a running day, and running in this ice-cold weather is taking some getting used to…but I’m coming along.

Song of the Day: How Do U Want It? - Tupac. There wasn’t really a song that I heard today that really stood out, so we’re going to go with the old, reliable Tupac classic, How Do U Want It? Great song.

Halloween is tomorrow, which means it’s almost November…which means we’re down to about seven months before the wedding. I’ve come a long way, but I have a lot more to do.

    More tomorrow.

Foosball is a common occurrance in our office. At least one game goes down each day. I’m not good…at all…and I seem to be dragging Alex down with me. At least until this week….

For the past three days, it’s been the power team of Alex and me versus Jeff and Gabe. Alex and I are undefeated. We’ve won three squeakers that came down to the final point, but it was our second game today that signaled our coming out party. It was a dominating performance. One that may not be rivaled again on a foosball table.

Seriously, it’s been awesome. We were on an unheralded losing streak, but like the St. Louis Rams, we turned the tables and started getting better. Now we’re En Fuego, to quote mid ’90s Sportscenter.

The only thing that wasn’t awesome was the fact that due to video game distraction, I forgot to make myself a lunch last night. I was at the mercy of the chain of food places along Delmar and settled on St. Louis Bread Company. It really isn’t that bad for you. I had 1/2 a smoked turkey sandwich and a cup of baked potato soup, which isn’t a horrible lunch (Nutritional Info…I would have posted the individual dishes, but the Panera website doesn’t really work that way.)

Wendy and I had our dance class tonight, so dinner was something quick. Wendy had pasta and zucchini while I had two turkey hot dogs and okra. We were out of hot dog buns, so like George Costanza heading to his fake house in the Hamptons, I had to get nuts. I took a wheat tortilla, ripped it in half, put a little mustard on it and wrapped the dogs like pigs in a blanket. It wasn’t too bad. I’ll take a bun any day, but as a bun substitute, it was ok.

We’re absolutely killing this dance class. The Grassmuck men can just dance. I can’t help it. It’s in my blood.

Song of the Day: Victory - Puff Daddy, Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes. Part of my job with the Rams was to write a piece for the game day program called Rams Reaction. I’d ask questions like ‘if you played baseball and had to choose your batting music, what would it be?’ This would be my emphatic answer if someone asked me this question.

I’m going to make my lunch right now, I promise.

    More tomorrow.

I have to start this off by saying that there is one dessert that stands out above all other desserts: The Cupcake. It’s my absolute favorite. It’s the perfect combination of cake and cookie, a hand-held cake, complete with icing.

So, when I got in to work this morning, there was a bright orange icing-made face staring at me…burning a hole right through to my soul. It was a pumpkin…made of cupcakes. You heard me right, a pumpkin face, created by the icing of many, many cupcakes. It was a horrifyingly glorious sight.

It called to me all day long. I could see his sh*t eating grin, just staring at me as if to say ‘you know you want to eat this piece with my eye on it…but you can’t.’

Well, I showed him…I didn’t have a single bite of a cupcake all day. That may not sound like anything special, but believe me…it took everything I had. I stuck with my two-day-old salad that I took to work on Monday instead. Delicious…

This all occurred after I went for my morning run…in the F-R-E-E-Z-I-N-G cold. Yeah…that wasn’t fun, but I powered through. Thankfully it’s going to be warmer the next few days, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

I didn’t get my free taco from the World Series, so for dinner, I made some ground-turkey tacos with wheat soft-tortilla shells. They were delicious. I’m a fantastic cook, if I do say so myself. And I do.

Song of the Day: Livin’ on a Prayer - Bon Jovi. I love Bon Jovi. Yes, I know it’s not 1987 anymore, but still…these guys are great. They will always be great.

Well, I was pushed to my dessert limit today, and I came through. Let’s hope the results are prevalent on Sunday.

    More tomorrow.

    Me and Joe

    Me and Joe

Well, we’re back from a long, but outstanding weekend in Kansas City with my brother Joe and his crew. I said I was taking the weekend off from working out, and basically that meant that I took Saturday off. I ran Friday morning and Sunday night when I got back.

What I did take the weekend off of was eating well..which is somewhat to be expected when you’re out of town. i won’t go into all the gory details, but I will say this, we were in KC…and you can’t leave KC without having eaten some good KC barbeque. Saturday night, Wendy, Joe and I ate at a place called Jack’s Stack, which is Joe’s favorite, for good reason.

We really didn’t do much Friday night, just hung out at Joe’s place and watched a couple episodes of The Office. Saturday, though, was a different story.

We had tickets to the Kansas-Texas Tech game, so we kicked the day off at about 5:30 a.m., because we had to drive to Lawrence, Kan., for a 7:00 a.m. tailgate. There was much beer pong played and good times had before the game started at 11:00 a.m. The game was…interesting. KU got completely smoked, but it was still fun.

After a brief tour around Lawrence, we grabbed some subs at Yello Sub (I had a turkey and guacamole) and headed back to Joe’s place for lunch…and a much needed nap. When we were well rested, we headed to dinner at Jack’s Stack and the Kansas City Power and Light district. The P&L is an awesome place. For those who haven’t been, it’s a bunch of bars and clubs that open to an outdoor, yet covered, courtyard. You can get drinks and take them anywhere else with you.

Unfortunately for us, a sweet Metallica concert let out across the street when we got there, so all the dudes with their worn Metallica t-shirts that they bought in 1989 were flooding into the P&L. So we escaped to one of the bars…a country bar called the PBR (yes, professional bull riding…) Big Country.

Now, as you’ve seen on this blog, I listen to a variety of music….but I pretty much stay away from anything country. If that’s your style, more power to you, but it’s just not my thing. I was pleasantly surprised with this place. It wasn’t overwhelmingly country, and they mixed in some Bon Jovi and stuff with the country, so overall it wasn’t too bad.

We ended the night at a place called the Shark Bar. Now, this place was cool. They played all songs from back in the day, including some Backstreet Boys (Wendy’s favorite!).

A fun time was had by all…except my diet. But you know what? That’s OK. One weekend every once in a while is fine. I just have some extra work to do this week to make up for it.

So, how do I start out? By having a company lunch at a Mexican restaurant, of course! Hey, it’s a free lunch…none of you would pass that up either!

So, I have even more work to do this week, but I’m not worried. All will be well next weekend, I promise.

    And if it’s not…blame Joe…

    (just kidding, dude.)

Song of the Day: What Is Love - Haddaway. I had to do it. It was awesome when it came on in the Shark Bar and every single person was doing the head bob. It was great.

    It’s time to get serious.

    More tomorrow.

Well, it’s a couple days early, but here are the stats before I head to the western side of the great state of Missouri…..

    Original Weight: 297 lbs.
    Last Week’s Weight: 271 lbs.
    This Week’s Weight: 267 lbs.
    +/-: - 4 lbs.
    Goal Met?: Heck Yeah!
Weight Lost since 7/6: 30 lbs.

Wow…the big 3-0. It’s better in this case than it will be for me in 2012. That’s great news. Now I just have to make sure I keep it that way this weekend.

Mini side-note: If you didn’t see Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update special last night, it was absolutely hysterical….Click Here to watch the opening and George W. Bush’s endorsement for McCain and Palin in the election between “The hot lady and the Tiger Woods guy.”

Oh, get your minds out of the gutter, that’s not what I mean.

You see, this morning I had trouble dragging my butt out of bed yet again. I was out of it again and though I kept hitting the snooze button, I really don’t remember it….

Anyway, I glanced outside, as I do every morning, to make sure it wasn’t raining (my glasses were on the bedside table, by the way…) and it wasn’t raining at that point…I swear….

I got all dressed, including the new ankle supports that I purchased yesterday, and was about to head outside when, low and behold, it was P-O-U-R-I-N-G. It wasn’t just raining, it was a torrential downpour.

So, when that happens (and it hasn’t often, surprisingly enough…knock on wood…), I’m forced to go to the “gym” at the apartment complex leasing office. The apartment “gym” is about the size of a walk-in closet….maybe smaller. No, definitely smaller.

It’s an eliptical, a treadmill, a stationary bike, a stair stepper and one of those all-in-one weight machines all within about a foot of each other with a TV that doesn’t work and a nice big window that looks into leasing office. it really gets you jazzed for a great workout.

So, on top of that, I was running late…way late. I went up there, but only had time to run for about 15 minutes before A. I felt like I was going to snap 1989’s finest treadmill in half, and B. I had to head back to the apartment to get ready for work.

I  made it to work with plenty of time, but I was disappointed in my lack of working out. I decided to rectify that when I got home by running a lap around the complex before dinner and, something I’ve referenced but haven’t really talked about, The Office…oh, and that one thing that’s going on, that baseball game….

I have to get off track here for a litte bit and talk about how much I love The Office. It’s easily my favorite show on TV. It’s one of those shows that’s never a let down. It brings it every week, and this week was no different. If you’re not watching The Office, you’re probably the only one on the planet…and maybe other planets also.

Anyway, I finished my chicken salad (thanks for the spice Mr. B!) for lunch and made two turkey dogs with some baked lays for dinner….even though our hot dog buns were moldy. Is it just me, or does wheat bread mold way faster than white bread? What’s with that?

Song of the Day: Superstar - Lupe Fiasco. I love this song. I hadn’t heard it for a while, but it always reminds me of Nashville, Tenn. When I was working for the Rams during training camp, we had to spend a few days in Nashville scrimmaging with the Titans before we played them. The night we got in, Rams Senior Writer Nick Wagoner and I hit the gym, which happened to be the same night as the start of the HBO series Hard Knocks, featuring the Dallas Cowboys. Superstar played at the end of the episode…for some reason, the song makes me think of that.

No matter what you do, you will always have to face adversity. It’s how you respond that determines your success. A couple weeks ago, I was tested with my dinner choices. This week, it was my drive and desire to continue working out. I feel like I rose to the challenge, but only the scale will tell.

Speaking of the scale, I’m moving the weekly weigh in up to tomorrow morning, since Wendy and I are heading to Kansas City this weekend to see my brother, Joe, and watch the University of Kansas (his alma mater) take on Texas Tech. There probably won’t be a lot of time for…well, anything. My brother has the weekend pretty much planned out. With that in mind, I’m going to give myself the weekend off of working out…not only because I’m going to be out of town, but because I feel like my body deserves a couple days of rest, especially after this week. I’ll try to update this weekend at some point just to let you all know what’s going on, and I’ll be back Monday with a full wrap up.

    More tomorrow.

First of all, my apologies for not blogging yesterday. You see, no matter how old I get, I remain a nerd…a nerd that has a passion for video games. Yesterday marked the release of Fable 2 for the ol’ Xbox 360…so I was a little distracted….

Anyway, with all types of sports and exercise, there are going to be some setbacks, and I hit my first bump in the road on Tuesday. Well, it was Monday, rather. My right shin started to get a little sore when I moved my ankle or stepped down on it hard, but not until later in the day, well after my morning run.

It got progressively worse, and it was pretty bad on Tuesday morning. I tried to give the stairs a go. I got that portion in, and it held up OK, but when I tried to finish it off with a lap around the complex, it got so painful I had to just call it and walk back.

It was pretty sore throughout the day Tuesday, but it slowly got better. I did a little research, and the best thing I can come up with is that it was shin splints (with a second opinion from Dr. Asian Snake), which happens frequently among runners. Rest is the best medicine, so I tried to stay off of it for the rest of Tuesday.

This morning, I felt fine. I went for my normal run around the apartment complexes and felt no pain at all. That was a good thing, because I was worried that I was going to be out of commission for a while.

I also had some added exercise this evening, because Wendy and I started a West Coast Swing (still have no idea what that means…) dance class with her parents. Her parents took a class a while ago and really enjoyed it, so we decided to join them for this one to get a little added exercise, not to mention a few moves for the wedding reception…

I have to say, if I were on Dancing with the Stars, I would win. Hands down. Not even Jerry Rice could compete with me. No, stop it. I’m serious.

After our dance class, Wendy and I went to the store and I got another pair of jeans…and a pair of corduroy pants…and two shirts. At no point in my life have I ever gone into a clothes-purchasing situation with an ounce of optimism…until now. It’s still a new feeling. I’m getting used to it.

I also took some precautionary safety measures by getting some ankle supports and some gel insoles for my running shoes (another Dr. Asian Snake recommendation).

Eating wise, I’ve been in great shape since the Taco Bell fiasco. Wendy and I had chicken sandwiches and green beans before our dance class, and I had a low calorie chicken salad for dinner last night, lunch today and I’ll finish it off at lunch tomorrow.

(Mini side-note: The chicken salad is extremely easy to make, it’s just canned chicken, fat free mayo and some seasoning that we got from Wendy’s dad. Mr. B, if you’re reading this and you wouldn’t mind giving away your secret seasoning, I’m sure the other person that reads this would appreciate it if you left it in a comment…).

Song of the Day: Lucifer - Jay Z. Whenever I hear this song, it always makes me think of the end of a first-season episode of Entourage that it was used for. Also, it’s a great song with a Kanye West produced beat.

I’m not sure what happened to my leg, but it seems to be back to normal now. I’m not so sure that all the walking I did on Saturday plus driving eight hours (it was my driving leg…) on Sunday didn’t have something to do with it. I’ll have to keep an eye on it.

    More tomorrow.

I have returned from Louisville. It was a great time…but not great for weight loss.

Wendy, Alex, Emily and I left St. Louis at around 10:30 a.m., downing some bagels and coffee for the road. We were able to hear the first half of the Rams game, they destroyed the Dallas Cowboys, and made our way to the Derby City.

Four hours later, we were sitting in a British pub-style place for lunch. I was downing a roast beef and cheddar sandwich with Jason and the crew before he had to head to the arena to get ready to defend his DCW (Derby City Wrestling) title.

DCW is great. The sampling of people that watch these wrestling matches is outstanding. The crowd alone makes the event worthwhile. ‘The Professor’ (Jason) was supposed to be a part of a tag match (with weapons), but ended up having to defend his title, because he’s moving to the WWE soon.

He came out and yelled at his opponent, a goon named Lumpy Magoo, at the beginning of the event. The next time we saw him, he came out with his crew, a fraternity, for the weapons-allowed tag match, which was supposed to be the grand finale. He was immediately sent away….the Ref couldn’t let them have an advantage. They’re the bad guys.

He came back out at the end of the match and got taken out by the hillbillies…who are the good guys….yes, they’re the good guys, you read that right…and then Lumpy Magoo decided to invoke his anytime, anywhere title match while the Prof. was lying hurt on the mat.

The Professor still owned the match, and it’s obvious that Jason is much more skilled than any of the other wrestlers, which is why he deserved a WWE contract over some of the other guys that have been there for years. I’ll admit a bias, but he really is just better than the rest of them.

Unfortunately for The Professor, he had to drop his title to Lumpy because he is moving. Unfortunately for me, we stopped at Taco Bell on the way out for a late dinner. terrible. But first of all, it was the only place open that late, second of all, I was starving. I really cut back on what I would have normally gotten…and believe me, I paid the price for eating Taco Bell all day long. I’ll leave it at that.

It was tough to get up today. We got back at 2:30 a.m. last night/this morning, and I couldn’t fall asleep until way after four. I still got up and ran in the morning before going to work. I didn’t, however, pack a lunch…

Alex and I drug our weary bodies to St. Louis Bread Company, where I had a turkey and avocado panini (I think that’s how it’s spelled…). It was delicious, and I came to find out later that it was good in terms of calories, only like 350, maybe less. I was impressed. St. Louis Bread Company has a lot of sandwiches with 400 calories or less. It’s a good place to have across the street in a pinch.

After work, Wendy made some tomato-basil chicken with rice and zucchini. It was delicious. I decided to go to the store and….pick up some clothes after dinner. It was a good trip. I needed some new jeans, and I found some…with a four-inch smaller waist than the ones I’m wearing now.

Follow that up with Chuck and Heroes on NBC…it was a great night.

Song of the Day: Hey Mama - Kanye West. Great song. It means a lot to me.

I’m going to continue to flush the taco toxins out of my system and get back on track this week. Next weekend, Wendy and I head to Kansas City to see my brother and the Kansas-Texas Tech football game in Lawrence, Kan.

I have to be on my game this week.

    More tomorrow.

looks like I have a couple minutes for the stats before I head to Louisville. Here you go:

    Original Weight: 297 lbs.
    Last Week’s Weight: 274 lbs.
    This Week’s Weight: 271 lbs.
    +/-: - 3 lbs.
Goal Met?: Yes, and then some!
Weight Lost since 7/6: 26 lbs.

Not quite another six-pound week, but I’ll take it. I’m back on track, and that’s exactly where I needed to be this week.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my tales of all Louisville, Ky., has to offer. Let’s hope Jason can defend his DCW title and that the Rams can steal a win from the Dallas Cowboys.

I apologize for not posting anything yesterday. I’m sure all four of the people who read this were completely distressed…

Well, now, I’m back…and I’m happy to report that it’s been a very good weekend, a nice cap to what I’ve felt has been a good week. Back to making better choices and beating world records. The weather has been awesome, albeit a little chilly.

I also have to preference by saying that I’m going to put myself out there a little bit, because it’s been a very political weekend, and I can’t really update you on my progress without mentioning the stuff that I did which led to decisions on meals and workouts as the schedule changed a little bit.

This weekend is one of those that served as a reminder of how much I missed being able to enjoy nice fall weekends without working when I worked for the Rams. I love the Rams, I loved my time there, but you work so much, that you start to miss weekends like this.

In what turned out to be a very political weekend, my friends and I kicked it off with dinner at salad-bar type place called Sweet Tomatoes on Friday night. I’d never been, but my friends Chris and Sherrie really liked it, so we checked it out. Plus, it’s the type of place I should be eating at if I’m going to lose any weight.

They basically have a giant salad bar with all sorts of salad toppings, a soup bar, a bread bar and a pasta bar. I made my salad with spinach, vegetables (I really don’t remember much besides tomatoes and radishes…) and a mixture of basalmic vinager and olive oil for a dressing (which my future father-in-law frequently uses on his salad…mini side note, if you want to talk about some people that have lost some weight recently, Wendy’s parents have been incredible…I think her dad’s about half the size he was when I first met him…and her mom, if she continues getting thinner, we won’t be able to see her anymore…she wasn’t a big lady to begin with.)

I also had a bowl of this lime-chicken soup they had…and one small scoop of shrimp bisque. I can’t resist the bisque. I love it, so I had to have a little bit. I also had a piece of cornbread and another muffin…overall a pretty healthy meal.

After dinner, we caught Oliver Stone’s new movie, W, the biopic about George W. Bush. It was decent, not great, not terrible. There wasn’t a whole lot of new information, but it did give you a decent insight into W. Josh Brolin was outstanding as the President (Yes, Mikey’s brother from the Goonies played the President…) as was Richard Dreyfus as Dick Cheney (I can’t see Dreyfus without thinking of this clip from SNL).

Saturday morning may have been the coolest part of the weekend, and there’s still a very important part left…but more on that in a minute. Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama held a rally in St. Louis Saturday morning underneath the gateway arch. This is where I said I’d be putting myself out there a little bit. It was outstanding to see how many people showed up for this thing, with the reports claiming over 100,000 were on hand. I had seen Barack speak before at the Edward Jones Dome during the primaries, but there weren’t nearly as many people.

What does that have to do with my weight loss progress? Well, when you go do something like that, it just throws your whole day off, although it’s well worth it. I got back late from the movie, so I slept until like 8:00 when it was time to get up and get ready to head to the Rally. For the first time in a long time, I’m not sure how long, I skipped my morning work out.

Chris, Sherrie and her sister Sherea, along with Wendy and I, thought it would be a good idea to stop and get some bagels and coffee from Einstein Bros. on the way down, which, in theory, was. When we got down there, we walked halfway across St. Louis to get to the end of the line to enter the arch grounds. Once we got in line, it was quite a process just to eat a bagel and pour a cup of coffee while walking, but we pulled it off pretty well…and hey, I ate breakfast again!

The rally ran well past one, so we were all pretty hungry when we got out of there. We ate at this soup/sandwich place in Webster Groves, which I don’t remember the name of (Calypso, maybe?). I had a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich with a side salad.

After walking around downtown St. Louis, we picked up Chris and Sherrie’s nephew and cousin before lunch. After lunch, we went and walked around the zoo for a while. The St. Louis zoo is amazing. It’s free to get in, and it’s one of the best zoos in the country. I ended up getting plenty of exercise for the day, but I still came back to the home and went for a run after the zoo, just to keep my routine.

I watched as much of the Mizzou game as I could before Wendy, Alex and I went to House of Wong, one of, if not the best Chinese restaurants in the St. Louis area. There’s one by us in Creve Coeur and another one in Clayton. It’s really good, try it if you get a chance. I had the “Fried Healthy Brown Rice,” with shrimp, which was outstanding, and we split some edamame.

We came back and caught Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin on SNL (She had about three lines…) and that pretty much brings us to now. Tomorrow will be a pretty exciting, yet very long, day because Wendy, Alex, Emily and I are driving to Louisville, Ky., to see our friend Jason who is defending his Derby City Wrestling title one more time before heading to Florida to start training with WWE.

I don’t think I ever congratulated Jason on his big move, but he recently signed a developmental contract with the WWE and will be continuing his professional wrestling career in Florida. It’s really cool for him. He and Alex and I and the rest of our crew of friends were very into the WWE back in the day, so it’s so cool to see Jason having so much success with it. It wasn’t long ago that we were gathering at his parents’ house to watch the Sunday night Pay Per View events.

Song of the Day: Believe - Yellowcard.

“Everything is going to be all right. Be strong, believe.”

I’ll be back at some point with another Weekly Weigh in, but it’s likely that it won’t be tomorrow. The weigh-in will be, but I probably won’t have time to blog about it…so you’ll just have to be in suspense. I’m sure all three of you (I figure I lost a least one by revealing my political stand…) will be in shambles, but try to hold yourselves together as best as you can.

    More sometime.

    -Brett
