Hello everyone, I’m back, and this time I bring a report not of food or exercise, although both of those will be included, but a report of a reporter and a wrestler. That’s right, last night Wendy, Sherrie, Chris and I hit the theater for the film doubleheader taking down Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler. I just assumed Paul Blart: Mall Cop was sold out, so we had to force ourselves to see the Oscar-nominated movies instead…

We started the night off with Frost/Nixon, a Best Picture nominee, about the series of interviews between TV Show Host David Frost and recently-resigned President Richard Nixon. Wendy and I both absolutely loved this movie, but with both of us having backgrounds in media, this was right up our alley. Frank Langella was excellent as Tricky Dick, making you both love him and hate him at the same time. The entire cast was great, actually, and I loved the way they made it look somewhat like a documentary with interviews sprinkled between scenes. It’s very well deserving of a nod for Best Picture this year.

After that, we were leaving the theater, and just decided on a whim to head back in to see The Wrestler, which was the other movie we wanted to see. Now, had I known we’d be seeing both, it would’ve been better to see this one first. Even though it’s the story of a former professional wrestler, it’s very sad. Mickey Rourke plays the broken, beat down, steroid abused professional wrestler perfectly. He’s the reason to see the movie, because his performance was outstanding. It really made the movie good. Heads up, though, as there are some pretty gruesome wrestling scenes and a lot of Marissa Tomei in the buff. (Side Note: Why has she been nude in every movie she’s done lately?) None of those things bother me, and they help develop Rourke’s character, Randy “The Ram” Robinson, but a fair warning just in case that’s not your cup o’ tea.

Prior to the moviefilms, Wendy and I knocked out some homemade nachos with turkey and low-fat cheese. Delicious. This morning, i got up and went to the gym and knocked out my usual Saturday morning half-hour bike-a-thon. Then, as I have become accustomed to doing on the weekends, I made myself an omelet for breakfast/lunch/brunch, whatever you want to call it.

I use a variety of ingredients, but I really like getting the prepackaged turkey chunks from the grocery store, and using them with a combination of some kind of vegetables and cheese, usually low-fat feta. Today I used turkey, mushrooms and a little feta. It wasn’t my best looking omelet, but it tasted good. The key to the omelet is to grease the pan with some cooking spray, making sure you hit the sides. Then, when you put the egg in (three eggs, 2 whites, one whole egg, 2 splashes of milk, beat with a fork to combine), you swish it around the pan to make a wall on the outside. Let it sit for a while until the egg starts to firm up, swish it again to reinforce the wall. Eventually, the wall will start to pull away from the pan. This will allow you to get a spatula in there and get a perfect fold, after you’ve put the ingredients in the middle, of course. Also, I’ve found that with certain ingredients, you may want to cook them first and pour the egg over them, instead of putting them in the middle. When I use turkey and mushrooms, I like to cook them both a little before hand, so I’ll make a nice flat layer in the pan first, let them cook a little while, then pour the egg on top. That way, you’ll be able to fold better and it will hold together better as well.

Anyway, that was a pretty long-winded description, but that’s what I do. So, yeah.

Song of the Day: Bang Your Head - Quiet Riot. This was Randy “The Ram” Robinson’s entrance music. He loved the ’80s, and thought the ’90s sucked.

I feel like it’s been a pretty good week, and I hope it has. Super Bowl Sunday is not kind to someone trying to eat right. If I got ahead of it, though, it won’t be too bad. I’ll talk more about the game tomorrow.

    More tomorrow.

Yeah, so tonight was a little disappointing after dinner…I’ll get to that later, though…because there was no new Office on. However, they showed a good one, where Jim tracks Dwight’s workday to make sure he’s not ’stealing time’ from the company.

We make frequent references to the time thief episode of the office, constantly calling each other out for stealing time. Honestly, though, who hasn’t thieved company time? Lord knows I have…I spend every day playing at least one game of foosball, and numerous games of Announce Media Hockey (it’s like penny soccer, but with lego pucks and goals). But, thieving time has never kept me from accomplishing a task, so, is it really stealing time? That’s your ethical issue for today.

Anyway, I hit the stair machine early this morning after traipsing through the snow yet again. I’m really getting sick of the snow. Seriously. Anyway, it was a good workout followed by some push-ups and sit-ups, as usual for a Thursday. I took down another wrap at work for lunch, but dinner was pretty good. Wendy made some Shake and Bake pork chops with potatoes. I had a sweet potato with some zero calorie butter spray and a sprinkle of brown sugar. It was great.

Of course, I have to mention that the final night of American Idol auditions was tonight, thank god. The auditions just get terrible after a while. It’s all just horrible, annoying people trying to get on TV. Ridiculous. It’ll get better next week and even better when they weed out all the singers that they let through that they probably shouldn’t have.

Song of the Day: I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston. This one’s for my lovely fiancee. She sings it in the car.

We’re heading into the weekend. Let’s hope for a win on Super Bowl Sunday.

    More tomorrow.

Hello everyone, I’m back again, and I’ve made it through the elements. We had about six inches of snow last night, which was really fun driving to work in this morning. The most fun part, though, was trying to back my car out over the giant mound of snow behind it. You see, our apartment complex just drives a snowplow through the circle that is the parking lot, so all the snow just gets piled up behind everyones’ cars. It’s a really good system…not.

Also, I found out that snow and treadmills do not mix. I had to traipse through the winter wonderland outside to get to the gym, so my shoes were soaking wet for my morning run. I honestly feared for my life. They squeaked against the tread almost the entire time. Again, not cool.

I did get an extra workout…sort of…because I stopped to help some dude get his car over the snow wall before going back to my apartment after my run. I, however, had no help. I just had to Austin Power’s it out of there. You know exactly what I mean.

BUT, Panera/St. Louis Bread Co. was offering free coffee all day, which worked out well, because there’s one right across the street from the office. They were debuting a few new flavors. I went with the Hazelnut. It was very good.

The office was pretty sparse today, as the roads were absolutely terrible this morning. The lunch table wasn’t very full, so I had plenty of room to enjoy my wrap. The other day, Wendy bought some sun dried tomato and basil tortillas, and I put one to use today. I also added some roasted chicken, cheese, spinach and a little fat free mayo. It worked out very well.

I actually went back to the wrap for dinner, but this time, I used Wendy’s leftovers from Kitaro (don’t worry, I checked. They were still good.), which consisted of a few chunks of steak and chicken. Wendy suggested that I use them in wrap form with some rice. I did just that, adding some mushrooms, a little soy sauce and…some chili sauce! I love the chili sauce. It’s great. My favorite is the stuff they have at Pei Wei, which is an offshoot of P.F. Chang’s, but I actually think the food is better. The wrap…money. I loved it.

After dinner it was the final week of Idol auditions, thankfully, and we watched our latest Netflix movie, Kung Fu Panda, after that. Kung Fu Panda is the story of an overweight Panda named Po that learns Kung Fu by utilizing his love of eating. A man after my own heart. The only thing my love of eating has ever lead to is heartburn. I loved the movie, it was great. I also enjoy Jack Black, who provides the voice of Po as well as his “awesomeness” and “bodacity.”

Song of the Day: When I Look To the Sky - Train. Some kid sang this before launching into a song by Rafi- yeah, random, I know-on American Idol. He was only OK, but I forgot all about this song..and Train, but I liked them when they were prominent.

According to Po, “there is no charge for awesomeness…or attractiveness.” I think he’s only half right. While there may never be a fee charged for any amount of awesomeness, attractiveness is something that comes with a price…a lot of hard work. That’s something I’m finding out first hand.

Sorry everyone, I was consumed by the wrath of Jack Bauer last night and I completely neglected to blog. While I wait out the 13.5 million inches of snow to stop falling, I’ll regale you with the tales from the weekend as I promised on Sunday.

It began, as weekends tend to do, on Friday night. Wendy and I along with Alex, met some of Alex and my co-workers at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center for the Amateur Golden Gloves championship. My coworker Rease’s brother was fighting, so we all gathered to watch him and the other like 20 fights that were going on.

We shared some pitchers of beer and marked which boxers we thought would win, as well as the ones that ‘got after it’ in the ring. I think we went 3/14 when we decided we had enough amateur boxing action. That’s when the eating really got out of hand.

I was absolutely starving and it was somewhat late for dinner, like 11:00 or so. The closest restaurant to the Heart of St. Charles that was open was Buffalo Wild Wings. My downward spiral began with spicy garlic wings and fries and carried right into Saturday.

Saturday morning, Wendy and I and Alex and Emily went to Columbia to see Dr. Asian Snake, a very svelte looking, triathlon training, snake, if I do say so myself. We perused his apartment and rolled around Columbia until it was time for dinner. When you’re in Columbia, there’s only one place to go: Shakespeare’s Pizza. It’s incredible. I don’t even know how to describe it. I ate so much, Alex and I nearly took down an entire large pizza by ourselves. By comparison, Wendy, Emily and the Snake finished one amongst three people. Insane.

So, that bled into Sunday, which was pretty relaxing and a decent day eating wise until dinner, which we spent with Wendy’s family at Kitaro. It was also incredible. I’d been craving some red meat for a long time, so I had some steak and scallops with a side of a tuna roll. It was really, really awesome. Those hibachi-style Japanese steakhouses are amongst my favorite places to eat, and it was well worth the calories.

Anyway, that pretty much brings you up to speed. I went to work yesterday and today, and now St. Louis is fighting like six or seven inches of snow. Awesome. Wendy and I feasted on some low fat pasta last night, which I had for lunch today, and some tomato-basil chicken and rice tonight. Really good stuff.

Song of the Day: Rain - Breaking Benjamin. Yeah, this song is about rain…but instead of rain, I’m wishing the snow would go away and come again another day.

All the world (or at least all of St. Louis) is waiting for the sun.

    More tomorrow.

Hello everyone, sorry for the late post, but I was having a few technical difficulties. Here are the stats:

    Original Weight: 297 lbs.
    Last Week’s Weight: 247 lbs.
    This Week’s Weight: 247 lbs.
    +/-: 0 lb.
Goal Met?: No, but considering the feasts, I’d say it’s a small victory
Weight Lost since 7/6: 50 lbs.

Well, I didn’t lose any weight….but I didn’t gain any either. Normally, this would be very upsetting, but considering that I ate like the old me this weekend, it’s actually a small victory. We spent the weekend watching the MO Golden Gloves boxing championships and eating pizza in Columbia, Mo. I’ll give you all a full recap tomorrow, but I wanted to get the stats out there tonight.

    More tomorrow.

Well, I really don’t have much to report today. It was pretty slow. All I can really say is, I watched The Office, which I’m a huge fan of. This episode was kind of slow. It had it’s moments, but for the most part, it was only OK.

However, I did make two big ol’ plates of spaghetti for dinner for Wendy and myself. Of course, I went with whole grain pasta and ground turkey for the meat sauce. We had salads with balsamic vinagrette dressing on the side and a glass of some very tasty wine that Wendy got from her Matron of Honor, Lindsey (Thanks, Lindz!).

That was a follow up to my lunch of a nice turkey sandwich and carrot sticks. That’s right, no lunch out today. I finally was able to take down the lunch that I made and brought with me, so that’s good.

I hit the stair machine this morning, followed by some push ups and sit ups. Pretty standard. That’s really about it. Sorry for the lack of excitement…

Song of the Day: Thank You - Boyz II Men. Heck yeah, going old school. Awesome song.

I feel like it’s been a good week. I certainly hope so…we have a big weekend of eating coming up, which I’ll explain in more detail…this weekend.

    More tomorrow.

I got a little sidetracked yesterday, but I think it was worthwhile (I’m still in the spirit, as you can see to the left. Make your own Obama poster at http://obamiconme.pastemagazine.com/). Time to catch you up on the last two days.

I went to work, came home, went to work again, came home again. There, you’re up to speed.

Ok, so there was obviously more than that…but not too much, really. Every day this week I’ve been extremely consistent with breakfast. As a matter of fact, I’ve made sure to eat a bowl of cereal every single day before leaving the house. This may not sound like much, but for someone that basically didn’t eat breakfast for the previous several years of his life, that’s a pretty good feat.

I returned to my usual turkey sandwich, this time with carrots and a little hummus, for lunch today after having gone out the previous two days. Yeah, yeah, I know, going out is never good, but I think I came out of it OK. I had the salad from Panera (Side Note: I feel like I must clear something up. Being from St. Louis, I realize that this is and always will be St. Louis Bread Company, not Panera, but my brother interned for them one summer, and it was constantly referred to as Panera…so I blame him for my constant Panera references) on Monday, and yesterday a group of my coworkers decided to head out to Noodles and Company. I opted to go with the small portion of a Bangkok Curry with shrimp. It was less than 300 calories for lunch, which is pretty solid.

Tonight, Wendy made what I’m going to henceforth refer to as non-stir fry. It’s basically a stir-fry like dish, featuring rice, chicken seasoned with ginger and soy, and veggies. None of it is fried, hence the non-stir fry title. It’s very delicious.

It was another night of American Idol auditions, which are getting extremely old…let’s get on to the good stuff…followed by Wendy and I watching Step Brothers, which we hadn’t seen. I really enjoyed it. Wendy did not. I also threw some old CDs I had onto my iPod: Led Zeppelin, U2 and Sublime so far…

Actually, for the first time since we got back from Disney, I was able to crank out 25 straight minutes (and a five minute cool down) on the treadmill. That illness just killed me for like three weeks, but it’s gone now, officially.

Song of the Day: Santeria - Sublime. Fantastic song. I forgot I had this CD, so it was a sweet surprise when I found it in the old CD case.

It’s so hard to put what today means into words…but as a writer, I’m going to try and do exactly that, although nothing I write or say could capture the emotion of what today means to my generation

President Barack Obama (Photo from MSNBC.com)

President Barack Obama (Photo from MSNBC.com)

You spend your youth sitting in a classroom with a book in front of you. This book contains collections of historical events that shaped not only America, but the world; depressions, elections, wars and other major events.

My generation has experienced one of those history-altering events thus far, but unfortunately, it was a dark day in American history. The events of September 11, 2001 changed America forever.

Today, January 20, 2009, was another history-changing event, but this time there was cause for celebration.

All over the world people were celebrating the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. Obama, the first African-American elected President, was sworn in just one day after the nation celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. day. Forty years after King gave his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, that dream was realized in front of millions of people on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Democrat, Republican or independent, if today’s events don’t inspire you, I contend that you are uninspirable.

As I said before, it’s hard to capture in words what today’s events mean to America and it’s history, but, as he always does, President Obama knew exactly what to say. I read a headline that said his speech was ‘less memorable’ than speeches he’s given in the past. I’ll have to respectfully disagree. Just as I have before, I was captivated by his every word. I’m going to add a few of the points that stuck out to me, but to fully appreciate what the President said, you have to hear him say it, and you can do that Here.

    - “Every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.”

    - “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.”

-“As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals…Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.”

    and last, but not least:

-“In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: ‘Let it be told to the future world…that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive … that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].’”

There are challenges facing this nation like never before. President Obama inherited a nation plagued with a failing economy, poor education structure, worse healthcare and two wars. Today’s events were about rising up. They were about overcoming adversity. They were about coming together as a nation to meet these challenges head on and rebuild America into the glorious nation it once was.

It was an incredible start to what I hope will be an incredible Presidency, a term based on hope and inspiration, hard work and American ideals and restoring American credibility across the world. I do not envy the job that President Obama is faced with, but I believe strongly that if anyone can handle the tasks facing America, President Obama can.

Song of the Day: Signed, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder. One of the songs that was repeated throughout the campaign. Stevie Wonder performed it again tonight, outstanding song.

    More tomorrow.

If there’s one thing in the world that can make you not despise Monday morning, it’s that Jack Bauer is only hours away. That’s right, Jack’s back, and it’s amazing.

Tonight’s episode was a little slow, I’ll concede that, but I’ll also add that it doesn’t matter. The entire season could be hour-long episodes of Jack and Tony doing their taxes or reading a book, and it would be amazing. Jack Bauer makes everything better, and it’s been a long time since he’s been gracing my Monday nights…far too long.

Anyway, it was a pretty average Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. day, which Wendy spent at home cleaning while I was working. It’s hard to not get wrapped up in what’s going on right now with the inauguration less than a day away. It was largely because of Martin Luther King Jr.’s efforts that tomorrow was even possible…pretty amazing, but more on that tomorrow.

So, yeah…today I had lunch with my buddy/employer, Chris. It’s never good going out to lunch, but I think I made a good choice. I went with an Asian Chicken Salad from Panera. I didn’t have time to look before going to compare nutrition, but I looked when I got back. It’s one of the best things on the menu, actually, so that’s good. I was surprised how many of their sandwiches are just not good for you. I mean, some of them you  just know aren’t good, but I was surprised at how many calories just the turkey sandwiches had. It really seems like the soup is the best way to go.

I followed that up with a delicious dinner of turkey sausage, a few pirogies (a potato-filled pasta thing) and some edamame, before sitting down and taking in 24. Jack Bauer commands your full attention, and he deserves it.

Song of the Day: Dude (Looks Like A Lady) - Aerosmith. Yeah, this came through on the shuffle while I was running this morning…It was almost like being on the Rockin’ Rollercoaster…except not as fun…and a lot more sweaty…

I’m happy with today. I need to keep it going.

    More tomorrow.

Well, I’m not happy with my choices this week, let’s see how it played out:

    Original Weight: 297 lbs.
    Last Week’s Weight: 246 lbs.
    This Week’s Weight: 247 lbs.
    +/-: +1 lb.
    Goal Met?: ugh, no…
Weight Lost since 7/6: 50 lbs.

Yep, just as I suspected. You make bad decisions, you pay the price for it. I made some just dumb choices this week, and here are the results. To be honest, I’m surprised that I don’t weigh more than that.

On the bright side, I’m still under 250 lbs. for the first time since….I have no idea, actually. Since probably my freshman year of college…maybe.

Also, I was chatting with my friend, Dr. Asian Snake — who is training for a triathlon and has lost quite a bit of weight himself, although he’s added quite a few inches of long, flowing locks of hair — and we both came to the same realization this weekend. No matter how much weight we lose, we’ll never actually be small men. I’ll never actually be a skinny dude. That’s not a bad thing, at all, just getting all the fat off will be a tremendous feat. It was just funny that we both came to the same realization at the same time.

Anyway, better choices need to be made. I only have 20 weeks left.

    More tomorrow.
